1. Chest of the Covenant, ( tyrIB.h; !Ara] ), Josh. 3:6 (x2),8,14.

2. Chest of the Covenant, Lord of all the Land (#r,a'h'-lK' !Ada] tyrIB.h; !Ara] ) Josh. 3:11.

As both of these designators are set in the same narrative story, we shall examine them together. The first observation is that the designator, chest of The Covenant, is found located in the narratives concerned with the crossing of the Jordan, and the defeat of Jericho. It is not found mentioned again. It is found in the gathering prior to the crossing, in the midst of the Jordan, and finally, on the Western side, at Gilgal, and at Jericho. What was its purpose in these locations? The second designator, chest of the covenant, Lord of all the Land, is only found on the eastern shore of the Jordan. Can we find answers to these observations? Below is the text that contains both of these designators.

6 And Joshua spoke to the priests, saying, Take up the chest of The Covenant, and pass over before the people. And they took up the chest of The Covenant, and went before the people.

7 And YHWH said to Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.

8 And you shall command the priests that bear the chest of The Covenant, saying, When you are come to the brink of the water of Jordan, you shall stand still in Jordan.

9 And Joshua said to the sons of Israel, Come here, and hear the words of YHWH your God.

10 And Joshua said, Hereby you shall know that the living God (lae ) is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Hivites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Jebusites.

11 Behold, the chest of The Covenant, (!Ada] ) Lord of all The Earth, passes over before you into Jordan.

12 Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, out of every tribe a man.

13 And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the chest of YHWH, Lord of all The Land, shall rest in the waters of Jordan that the waters of Jordan shall be cut off from the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand upon an heap.

14 And it came to pass, when the people removed from their tents, to pass over Jordan, and the priests bearing the chest of The Covenant before the people

Some of this context was touched upon, by necessity, in the previous chapter, but we shall discuss it more fully here. Verses 6 and 14 appear to be in succession; verse 6 appears to be future tense instructions for the priests to parade the chest of The Covenant in front of the people, and verse 14 explains in the past tense the completion of those events; this designator occurs x3 in these two verses.
